Zagreb
On the bank of the River Sava sits this historical city, a labyrinth of cobbled streets dating back to the Middle Ages.
Dolac, a colourful open air market and the main square below Upper Town provides the hustle and bustle for a city full of fine monuments and buildings.
Maksimir park provides the relaxation, and is one of Europe's first planned parks, with lakes, pavilions, and sculptures, from as far back as 1794.


Dubrovnik
Within the thirteenth-century city walls is the jewel in the crown of Croatia.
Overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the city of terracotta rooftops is today a World Heritage Site, but was, until 1808, an independent state.
Rector's Palace, the Franciscan monastery, and many baroque churches date from this period.


Istria
The region was settled by the Romans in the fifth century and interesting sites remain, such as the well- preserved Arena, still hosting summer concerts and film festivals.


Dalmatia
Many intriguing sights are found within this area. An archipelago of 90 islands spread over 300 square kilometres, it is almost uninhabited.
Tourists usually take day trips but some stay in renovated stone cottages.
Further south is the second largest city, Split, and Trogir, a tiny city founded by Greeks 2,300 years ago.
Today, a World Heritage Site loved for its Venetian Gothic stone buildings.


Hvar
Beautiful island, popular for its blue sea, rocky coves and beaches. The charming port of Stari Grad is the oldest settlement on the island, while Hvar town has some delightful seafood restaurants and bars, which are increasingly becoming favourite hangouts for celebrities.
